Weekend morning ban on Beach Rd parking to be extended for a year
BAYSIDE Council has extended its weekend morning Beach Rd parking ban, despite there being more cycling accidents than during the pre-ban period and no State Government money for road improvements.
The Saturday and Sunday 6-10am no-stopping regulation, imposed in November 2010 to improve safety for cyclists, will stand for another year.
This is despite seven accidents involving bikes on that stretch of road last year.
Cr Alex del Porto said he believed the increasing number of cyclists on the road was to blame.
Cr del Porto called on the State Government to honour the previous government’s pledge of more than $1 million for road improvements.
A bicycle count would also provide the Government with hard data to work from, he said.
“I don’t see how we can control the behaviour of cyclists without legislation,” Cr del Porto said.

“Beach Rd cannot continue to take more cyclists. I think we’ve reached saturation point.”
