Cycling and Trains PSO's apprehend Cyclist riding without Helmet through Railway Boom Gates, Yarraville, Melbourne 3AW Melbourne Nov. 12th 2014 Community Safety

“It’s so easy to put on a helmet and the consequences for not using one

and falling off your bike are so high it makes no sense to ride without one,”

Sgt Lavos said.

I'm a bit ambivalent about whether this was excessive force without knowing more details,

what I can say is

the PSO's did the right thing in apprehending the man and may have saved his life.

Riding a bicycle without a helmet and through railway boom-gates

are serious traffic infingements which likely truncate lifespan.

'Heavy-handed' PSO shatters rider's arm

Posted by: 3AW online | 12 November, 2014 - 10:48 AM
A self-confessed "born jaywalker" has suffered a broken wrist after being tackled off his bike by a Protective Services Officer at Yarraville.
Kim Murray, who admitted to not wearing a helmet and crossing the railway tracks while the boom gates were down, had his ulna bone shattered and can’t work for three months because of the incident.
Mr Murray told Neil Mitchell the PSO was too heavy-handed, despite saying he had ignored their requests to stop on several occasions beforehand.
“It was pretty nasty,” Mr Murray said.
“He’s come running and tackled me and landed on top of me and snapped my wrist.
"He could have smashed my head into the nearby bin."
Xray of Kim Murray's broken wrist
Neil Mitchell said there was no doubt Mr Murray had made several errors in judgement but questioned the level of force used by the PSO.
"He (Mr Murray) did the wrong thing,” Neil said.
“He’s a dill.
LISTEN IN FULL: Kim Murray speaks Neil Mitchell
“If he hadn’t done the wrong thing, he wouldn’t have a badly broken arm.
“But people in positions of power and authority are required to act with a degree of restraint and reasonableness that doesn’t apply to the general public because they have got that power.”

  • The PSO should have left him alone to be HIT BY THE TRAIN.

  • Maybe next time this twit walks across while the boom gates are down and the bells are ringing he might run into something that may break more than his wrist. When will these morons wake up.

  • What an absolute idiot. He said he could have smashed his head, well that is why it is compulsory for cyclist to wear helmet. Broke so many rules (like a lot of cycle riders I see)and should most definitely be charged.

  • Seriously you can't fix stupid, the man is an idiot, booms are there for a reason. Think of the driver and the people that have to pick up your pieces if you misjudge the train or have a fall. Stop blaming the PSO for doing his job and take some responsibility for being a complete dill.

  • What did he think was going to happen? Don't run from the police or PSOs and you won't be tackled.

  • I listened until I couldn't listen anymore. He has had several run ins with the PSO's at the same station. He admitted that he deliberately did the wrong thing by going through a boom gate that was shut and then tried to evade the PSO's. So he got hurt because he was being an idiot and doing the wrong thing. If he tries to sue, I hope they fight him every step of the way! Self righteous idiot!
