This blog strongly opposes certain suggested reforms

VicRoads is currently considering:


"under one suggested reform, 

cyclists could be allowed to treat red lights as Give Way signs. 

And the same could also APPLY at pedestrian lights."   

Also

"PERMITTING cyclists, riding cautiously, to proceed past a stationary tram;"



"ALLOWING all riders to use the footpath, provided that they give way to pedestrians."

This blog commends Moorabbin Highway Patrol’s efforts to reduce and diminish the risks to community safety caused by the Hell Ride: 

an unofficial bunch cycling road race on public roads.

Police have deployed three police motorcycles and two marked cars to supervise the Hell Ride.

These significant police resources are provided at considerable expense to the community and taxpayer.

Many citizens might argue that five police vehicles could be put to better use than supervising recalcitrant, negligent, reckless cycling.

These cyclists shamefully participate on public roads in a disgraceful unofficial road race which ought not exist.

Police say it may take some time to reduce the risks to the community presented by those participants of the Hell Ride.

What history teaches us is that the moment finite Police resources are redeployed elsewhere the Hell Ride balloons once again and reverts to being a law unto itself.

The Hell Ride will need constant Police supervision with the taxpayer footing the bill.

Sen-Sgt Cormack said Operation Saintly involved significant police resources.
“At times we have been deploying three police motorcycles and two marked cars and have done so in order to try to keep the size of the groups from becoming too big and to keep them two abreast,” he said.


“We are also still seeing a small number of participants failing to comply with red traffic lights.”

“During these checks we found that the riders failed to have a bell fitted as required by law, which is of concern as participants in the Hell Ride often travel at speeds in excess of 50km/h,” Sen-Sgt Cormack said.

But Moorabbin highway patrol Senior Sergeant John Cormack said there was still a lot of work to be done to bring the unofficial Beach Rd bike race under control.

“We have been working with the group over the last few months and we are starting to see some very promising results but it still may take some time to provide comfort that all of the risks have been diminished or reduced.

POLICE are beginning to see results from a crackdown on law-breakers involved in the Hell Ride.
But Moorabbin highway patrol Senior Sergeant John Cormack said there was still a lot of work to be done to bring the unofficial Beach Rd bike race under control.

Operation Saintly has been running in recent weeks and part of the focus is on the Hell Ride, which attracts as many as 200 cyclists racing from Black Rock to Mt Eliza every Saturday.
Sen-Sgt Cormack said Operation Saintly involved significant police resources.
“At times we have been deploying three police motorcycles and two marked cars and have done so in order to try to keep the size of the groups from becoming too big and to keep them two abreast,” he said.
“We are also still seeing a small number of participants failing to comply with red traffic lights.”
Sen-Sgt Cormack said police were also carrying out safety checks on the cyclists and their bikes.
“During these checks we found that the riders failed to have a bell fitted as required by law, which is of concern as participants in the Hell Ride often travel at speeds in excess of 50km/h,” Sen-Sgt Cormack said.
“We have been working with the group over the last few months and we are starting to see some very promising results but it still may take some time to provide comfort that all of the risks have been diminished or reduced.
“I do wish to commend those riders within the group that have taken on a leadership role and are moderating their riding behaviour and holding others to account.”
